School Crossing Guards (SCGs) are part-time, civilian members of the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, under the supervision of the School Resource Officer Unit. Their uniform consists of a white shirt with an embroidered, civilian, Gold Star, Sheriff’s Office patches on the sleeves, and tan uniform pants. The SCGs responsibility is to expedite the safe movement of children on and across roads during the beginning and ending of school days. SCGs receive classroom and on-the-job training for school crossing procedures, practical field training in pedestrian crossing procedures, first aid, C.P.R., and human diversity training.
Traffic Control Officers (TCOs) are part-time civilian members of the Pasco Sheriff’s Office under the supervision of the School Resource Officer Unit. To become a TCO, they must first get hired on as a SCG and they then become eligible to be “promoted” to a TCO position. Working almost side-by-side with a School Crossing Guard, the TCO’s primary responsibility is to direct traffic at designated school crossings. TCOs wear the same uniform as SCGs. They are required to receive training for traffic direction, practical field training in traffic control and pedestrian crossing, first aid, C.P.R. and human diversity training.
