PSO’s Spot Helps Deputies Protect Pasco County

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office uses many resources to enhance public safety and protect its deputies, including a remarkable four-legged friend named Spot. Responding to hazardous situations where deputies may be in harm’s way, Spot is not your usual dog – it’s a robot. With the ability to open doors and retrieve objects, this cutting-edge technology enhances law enforcement’s reach and capabilities, ultimately increasing public safety.

Boston Dynamics developed Spot and equipped it with cameras and sensors, providing real-time visual and environmental data. It can traverse challenging terrain, open doors, go up and down staircases and move objects using a robotic arm. Deputies control Spot using a handheld tablet, allowing deputies to assess and address dangerous situations from a safe distance. Spot’s agility and remote operational capabilities make it a valuable resource during high-risk situations, such as barricaded subjects, threats to facilities and searching unsafe structures.

Spot is a part of PSO’s Innovation and Readiness Division, where it’s a key asset to our Unmanned Systems Team. This division also oversees significant initiatives like the Florida Forensic Institute for Research, Security, and Tactics (F1RST).

One of the core pillars of the research and education at F1RST is the use of robotics and drones in law enforcement and how they can support a safe resolution to the most hazardous situations. Together, they are committed to advancing public safety through technology and innovative solutions. Spot exemplifies this mission, offering capabilities that extend law enforcement’s reach while minimizing risk.

In addition to its emergency response role, PSO features Spot at community engagement events, where citizens can observe its capabilities firsthand. Spot’s presence at these events is more than just a fun way to connect with those we serve; it also showcases how technology enhances safety and efficiency in law enforcement operations.

PSO members continuously train with Spot to ensure its functionality and effectiveness during deployments. With this reliable robot, we can efficiently gather information to defuse dangerous situations while keeping civilians and our team members safe.
