PSO’s Response To Water-Related Emergencies

Pasco Sheriff’s Office is committed to protecting our citizens both on land and in water. With Florida experiencing a higher rate of water-related incidents than most states, it’s essential that we have the necessary resources to keep people safe. PSO is sharing information about our specialized teams, equipment and training that allow us to respond quickly and effectively to these unique situations.

Among PSO’s specialized units responding to water emergencies is our Marine Unit. They provide waterborne support for PSO members through search and rescue missions, maritime law enforcement, criminal investigations, boating safety education, as well as direct patrols to detect and deter criminal activity. Our Marine Unit consists of nine vessels and four certified law enforcement deputies. Their mission to keep boaters safe includes providing daily safety information along with responding to emergencies. They frequently check boaters for necessary safety equipment, such as permits, lifejackets and fire extinguishers. Additionally, they offer crucial safety information to those enjoying Pasco’s waterways.

PSO K9s are recognized for their unique and diverse skill sets, some of which support our waterborne units. While swimming is a natural ability for these dogs, they still undergo training to assist with search and rescue operations or apprehensions in water. The K9 Unit also trains aboard PSO vessels alongside our Marine Unit. During this training, the dogs practice narcotics detection while adapting to the new environment and acclimating to the waves. This type of training enhances our maritime operations by expanding the capabilities where K9 skills are needed.

Given that hurricane season spans half the year, it’s critical for PSO to have a comprehensive plan for responding to flooding. A key component of this plan is the Swift Water Recovery Team (SWRT), which is a part of the Waterborne Response Unit. They respond to flooded areas and identify flood concerns within the county. Using small, maneuverable vessels, deputies on this team can navigate flooded areas that are difficult to reach, expanding PSO’s reach in a crisis. The team is activated during and after hurricanes to rescue stranded individuals, assess damage and assist with cleanup efforts.

Another component of the Waterborne Response Unit is the Underwater Recovery Team (URT). The team consists of certified deputies and a forensic investigator, all open-water scuba certified through a nationally recognized agency. Their primary responsibilities include searching for, recovering, and documenting evidence and crime scenes underwater. Given our area’s numerous waterways, lakes and ponds, they are frequently called upon to assist with a wide range of cases, such as locating and retrieving crucial evidence that possibly was discarded in the water or searching for a missing person who may have drowned. Often, these situations require them to dive into bodies of water with limited visibility. As a result, they regularly practice maintaining their skills and becoming familiar with their equipment for underwater operations.

PSO strives to prepare for emergencies, particularly with hurricane season and our proximity to waterways. Our focus on maintaining essential resources enables us to respond swiftly and effectively to any water-related incidents. Stay connected with us on social media for the latest updates on our specialized units, equipment and training initiatives.
