Community Alert: Unlicensed Contractor Operation
Pasco Sheriff’s Office’s Economic Crimes unit recently conducted an undercover unlicensed contractor operation in the Gulf Harbors area in west Pasco County, resulting in 12 arrests of businesses and individuals performing work without the necessary licenses. Gulf Harbors is one of the areas heavily affected by the recent hurricanes, leaving its residents vulnerable to crimes such as unlicensed contractor fraud. Detectives used a staged home and followed local laws and regulations to identify unlicensed contractors offering electrical, air conditioning, and structural aluminum services. Audio from surveillance footage inside and outside the home depicts how unlicensed contractors exploit those looking to rebuild after the storm and the risks associated with this crime, including poor quality work and noncompliance with building codes. Contractor fraud renders victims liable for damages and reduces resources in a contract breach.
